It’s a question that we get a lot this time of year. As we head into the hot summer months here in Vero Beach, FL and Sebastian, FL many homeowners are concerned that their double paned windows are no longer functioning as they used to. Condensation Ahead!

Double pane windows are, as the name suggests made up of two panes of glass separated by a spacer and sealed creating an inner air chamber that is usually filled with some sort of gas, such as argon. When that seal is ruptured or wears out moisture is allowed to enter the unit. This trapped moisture collects as condensation on the inside of your panes, ultimately obscuring your view of the outside world.

The Fog That Wasn’t Really There

Perhaps you have had this happen to you. You walk past your window and it looks a little cloudy, so you come back with a bottle of window cleaner and a towel and clean the inside of the pane, but the cloudiness remains. “Must be on the outside” you say to yourself as you go out the house and clean that side of your double pane window. But it still stays cloudy, then it dawns on you…the cloudiness is in between the panes! Fogging of your double pane windows is really the same problem as condensation, just taken to the next level. The fogging will become thicker and more obtrusive with time and may even lead to a milky layer forming on the inside of your double pane window.

The most obvious of signals that your double pane windows needs replaced. Cracks, chips, or broken panes cause your once beautiful view to become distorted. What’s more, when your double pane unit is no longer sealed it is no longer energy efficient the resultant heat infiltration will be felt, by your air conditioning system.

Life in Melbourne, Florida and the surrounding area isn’t too shabby. The “Harbor City” offers some pretty outstanding views, especially if you are located on one of the barrier islands like our featured job this week.

This home, just a short drive up the road from Downtown Melbourne, FL has a tremendous view. Facing south, the home is able to view the rising sun in the east and the setting sun in the west all from a large 58” x 58” double paned insulated glass (or IG) unit. It’s not hard to imagine greeting each new day in front of that window or sipping your afternoon tea while tracking the sun across the sky!

Unfortunately, our homeowner hadn’t been able to enjoy that view for quite some time. As you can see from the pictures the outer pane of this window was broken allowing salty rain and dirt to enter the unit and completely clouding out his remarkable view!

Insulated Glass Replacement on a Historical Rockledge Home!

One of the great things about doing window repair and glass replacement is that sometimes you get the opportunity to work on really cool houses! That was the case in this weeks featured job.

We were privileged to work on this beautiful 1924 Spanish Colonial revival home in Rockledge. The home was the former residence of noted Architect Richard Rummell and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Walking into this home you truly feel like your stepping back into a bygone era!

AA Window & Glass Repair was called to replace two windows with low-e (low emission, or heat reflecting) insulated glass. From start to finish the job took less than an hour, although in truth, we could have stayed there all day! While glass replacement can sometimes be tricky (especially from second floor balconies!) this job was nothing but a pleasure! Thanks goes out to the homeowner for allowing us to work on this beautiful piece of our Brevard County history!
